December 18 to be Peak Online Shopping Day

Based on an analysis of 5 years of online holiday shopping data, the CyberSource Corporation predicts that Dec. 18 will be the biggest online shopping day of 2006. They provide this nifty shot of the biggest days in the past five years:
Based on CyberSource data, peak eCommerce shopping days in prior years have occurred as follows:
2000 - Monday, December 18
2001 - Monday, December 17
2002 - Monday, December 16
2003 - Monday, December 15
2004 - Monday, December 13
2005 - Monday, December 12
Notice that none of these days was the so-called Cyber Monday that Shop.org made-up last year. CyberSource says that while the biggest day has been moving earlier and earlier, this year that trend will reverse because the biggest shopping day has occurred on the Monday closest to Christmas when there is still a week left before Christmas.
Who knows if this estimate will hold up, as the picture above shows eMarketer predicted Dec. 4 would be the biggest day of 2006. One thing we can learn is if your server couldn’t handle the load on Monday you should beef up your system before next week.

However, with websites like CyberMonday.com reporting on the incoming deals, and news stories already touting headlines like, “Getting the Best Deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” it can’t hurt to attempt to take advantage of the hype, and get your store into the Cyber Monday game.
