Reviewing an eCommerce Facebook Application

For those of you in eCommerce who are members of Facebook, NextGen Shopping has just released a new shopping application for the social network. It’s called My Shopping, and it “allows you to connect with friends, co-workers, or family on your daily shopping activities.” The user can add wants, reviews and ratings to products within their profile, and share them with friends on site. From the screenshots, it looked like a fun, useful eCommerce application, so I decided to take it for a test drive and added it to my Facebook account this morning.
The application uses Shopping.com as a data partner, and attempts to bring a true shopping experience to Facebook, something that’s been missing in other eCommerce applications currently available. After adding My Shopping, I was taken to the My Shopping home, where I was presented with the option to search for products, and see all of my wants, reviews, ratings, etc. Also on the My Shopping home is a news feed (a collection of other user’s actions) showing wants, reviews and ratings posted by others. That news feed would be great when my friends started reviewing, I thought, but how do I filter out all of these other users?
After some poking around, it became apparent that you can’t really filter the My Shopping newsfeed, which is a concern. If there is such an option, right now it’s too difficult to find to be of any benefit to the normal user. While others might enjoy seeing a random recommendation, I would much rather keep the reviews I see between friends, so it would help to add some flexibility in that area.
Luckily, this is the biggest concern I had for the application as a whole. The product search yielded accurate results, even when given a misspelling like “Hary poter.” Once I clicked on a product, reviewing and rating the product proved to be intuitive. Other’s reviews are clearly displayed, as well as prices and links to the item on shopping sites such as Amazon, allowing the user to quickly make a purchase. I managed to find several divergent products using the service, and by the end of exploration I was enjoying having this functionality in my Facebook. The application also allows you to use all of your profile’s favorite lists as search terms, making it easy for me to re-buy one of my favorite books that had gotten lost in a recent move.
If you’re considering creating an eCommerce application for Facebook, My Shopping looks like the team to beat. Since the application was posted on Friday, 348 users have already signed up with more no doubt on the way. I recommend anyone in eCommerce add the application to their own profiles to enjoy it, and observe how such an application could benefit their own store.
In the end, I came away wishing more Facebook application developers had given their offerings this much thought and care. If only more eCommerce retailers would get into the game… I could get used to shopping on Facebook.
